(By Kathy Parsons of Solo Piano Publications)

Summertime is a beautiful, heartfelt journey through some of my favorite tunes, from the very familiar to the very obscure. These are songs that have meaning to me in my life, and songs that I most enjoy playing. As the long days of Summer play out with their warmth and the nights unfold, this music resonates with the romance of the season.

MP3 Sample -- 4:06 -- 4.8 Mb

1. Canon In D--An invigorating environment created from the seeds of Pachelbel’s beautiful Canon, penned in the 1600’s. This is one of the few classical pieces remaining in my repertoire because it lends itself so easily to embellishment; an atmosphere within which I can soar.

2. Your Song--Easily one of the more recognizable love songs of the last 50 years. Lyrical and sweet, this Elton John song evokes memories of more innocent times, young love and laughter.

3. No Frontiers --- MP3 Sample
--One of my favorite environments to be in. I first heard this song on an album of the same title by Mary Black, an Irish singer. I fell in love with it right away and set out to incorporate it in my life. With or without the lyrics, this beautiful tune speaks of romance and true love. ‘Heaven knows no frontiers, and I’ve seen heaven in your eyes.’

4. Summertime--One of the classic tunes of all time by George and Ira Gershwin. I first learned this tune playing with the band, Gopher Broke, in Edmonds, WA in the 70’s and I’ve had a lot of fun developing this arrangement over the years. I’ve tried, mostly successfully, to live my life as if it’s always summer time and this song takes me back to places I’ve known in Hawaii, the Washington Coast, and Humboldt County.

5. Satin Doll --Another enduring classic from the great songwriter, Duke Ellington. This one makes me happy and makes my listeners happy as well. A fun tune to play with an arrangement that sings.

6. Wonderful Tonight--This has long been one of my favorite songs to sing, and the solo piano version that is on this CD reflects it. A beautiful love ballad penned by Eric Clapton, this song takes me to a place filled with emotion and expressiveness. It’s great to be able to take what is notably a guitar tune and make it my own as a piano piece.

7. The Dance--I first heard of Garth Brooks when a friend played this song for me and suggested it for my repertoire. It fit so well with my playing and gave me a fine opportunity to stretch out at the end that it has been a mainstay of my performances since.

8. Wooden Ships--When I first began looking beyond classical music as a teenager, learning guitar and discovering contemporary songs, I was enchanted by the music of Crosby, Stills and Nash. Many of their songs have been in my Rock and Roll repertoire over the years and it gave me a lot of pleasure to come up with this arrangement of one of their classic tunes.

9. Storm Warning--Here is an environment filled with calmness, strength, peace and beauty. I heard this song on a Bonnie Raitt album and it was one of the first things I ever recorded digitally. The warmth with which it leaves me makes it a natural to end this album as well as being a great way to end my live shows.
