The End Of The Century

Matthew Cook --- ©2005

I guess my eyes were not wide open
Or I'd have surely seen

All those lofty thoughts we'd spoken
Were no more than a dream
It is written in the pages of history
Every cruelty has it'sa day
I guess we'd hoped that by the end of the century
This would all have passed away

We struggled on all through the seasons
Looking for the words to say
That all our hopes and all our reasons
Had somehow slipped away
It is written in the pages of you and me
All our troubles have an end
If we could look beyond the way things used to be
It could go that way again
And all of this will pass away

But no, my spirit's not been broken
For I can still believe
All those dreams of which we'd spoken
Could someday come to be
It is written in the pages of humanity
Every cruelty has its' end
When we learn to face the things that cannot be
It could go that way again
And all of this will pass away
